FORT MYERS, Fla. — Wilmington College bounced back from a first-game setback to shut out Newbury, 9-0, as the Gene Cusic Classic got under way Sunday afternoon.

The Quakers (1-1) fell to Penn State-Behrend, 7-1 in the opener.

“We came out very nervous and played tight,” Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said. “We didn’t do a good job of adjusting to their pitchers, but we did do a good job of forgetting that game to come back and get game two.”

Freshman Brittany Williams (Peebles/Northwest) had a pair of game-one hits. Kaylee Cox (Prospect/Elgin) drove in Wilmington’s lone run with a sacrifice fly.

Danielle Monnier (Houston) pitched three shutout innings in relief.

Monnier had a monster game two. The sophomore went the distance and gave up just two hits.

“Danielle was outstanding today. It was, by far, the best performance in her career. She came out and kept the ball down. She was really hitting her spots,” Floyd said.

Williams drove in two runs and scored a run. Kelsey Becker (Clarksville, Ind.) drove in two runs and scored twice. Chelsea Morrow (South Vienna/Northeastern) tripled, singled, drove in a run and stole two bases.

“Chelsea had an outstanding game,” Floyd said. “She got on base and made things happen.”
