WESTERVILLE — For the second time this season, Wilmington College’s distance medley relay team ran a school-record time as the Quakers competed in the Division III All-Ohio Championship, hosted by Otterbein University Saturday.

The Quakers finished 13th in the team standings with 14.50 points. Ohio Wesleyan claimed the team title with 98 points.

Wilmington’s DMR squad of Alek Erwin (Springfield/Northeastern), Jake Sydnor (Batavia/Clermont Northeastern), Brad Kline (Circleville) and Pat Carroll (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian) finished second overall in 10:32.69.

“We are pretty solid in that relay. It was a good run. We took 5 more seconds off the school record, but I think they can go a lot faster. I think we can go in the mid- to low-10:20s, and they think that, too. The situation to run a really fast time just hasn’t presented itself yet. When the OAC meet comes around, I think we can run faster than we did today and we can be right in there,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said.

In the field, Mason Metts (Pomeroy/Meigs) was sixth in the shot put with a best effort of 50-6. Michael Reavis (Huber Heights/Wayne) and Metts finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in the weight throw. Steve Balthis (West Alexandria/Twin Valley South) finished seventh in the high jump and eighth in the long jump.

“Those guys have been consistent. We just need to get a little bit better. We’re making improvements, but the competition in those events is so good in the OAC. Steve finished eighth in the long jump, but the top eight guys were all from the OAC. It’s just really competitive,” Combs said.

Wilmington will compete in the Kenyon Invitational on Feb. 18, with the focus set on the OAC Championship Feb. 24-25.

“We have a lot of young guys and they are doing a good job. I wasn’t totally happy today. I think we are a little better than we showed, but we didn’t show a lot of our cards today. I think we will do better at the OAC meet in a couple weeks,” Combs said.
