MARIETTA — Wilmington College tuned up for next week’s Ohio Athletic Conference Championship with a strong performance at the Marietta Open #3 Friday night.
Wilmington finished second with 122.75 points. Marietta won the 10-team event with 170.50 points.
“We wanted to come to Marietta because this was kind of a low-key meet,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said. “We got to compete against teams that we don’t normally see, which was a nice change of pace. We just wanted to generate some confidence in these kids. We are a really young team, and I think tonight was a really good step for us.”
Kelsey Stief (Upper Sandusky) had the top Division III time the mile run at 5:31.29, the fourth-best time in team history.
Annie Cekada (Mineral Point, Pa./Central Cambria) won the 3,000-meter run in 10:56.23
Morgan Orr (Mount Orab/Western Brown) was an impressive winner in the 500-meter run, hitting the line in 1:24.70.
The pole vaulting contingent of Mackenzie Wills (Troy/Troy Christian), Sarah Gaskell (Troy/Troy Christian) and Liz Delehanty (Euclid/Villa Angela-St. Joseph) went 1-2-7. Wills cleared 11-3.75.
Anna Foote (Pleasant Plain/Goshen) won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:30.77..
In the field, Allyssa McMullen (Warsaw/Riverview) and Chelsea Sites (Wilmington) finished second in the weight throw and high jump, respectively.
Brittany Gibbons (Blanchester) was second in the 3,000-meter run.
“Brittany ran the race of her life. We just tried some different people at different events, some different combinations,” Combs said. “Morgan Orr had never run a 500, and she looked great. Some kids really stepped up and performed big in events that they are not used to.”
