Reiber, Cane lead Quakers to 5-4 win

Wilmington College rallied from a 2-1 deficit to edge Capital, 5-4, in Ohio Athletic Conference women’s tennis action on the Quakers’ courts Thursday afternoon.

Wilmington is now 2-3 in OAC action, 3-6 overall. Capital drops to 0-6 in the conference, 0-10 for the season.

“That was a good bounce-back win for us in more ways than one,” Wilmington interim head coach Jessie Carmack said. “It was good to see how we responded from our loss to Muskingum, and good to see us rally back to win this match.”

Capital squeaked out 8-6 wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles to take an early 2-1 advantage. Wilmington’s lone doubles victory was provided by the No. 2 team of Michelle Reiber (Jamestown/Greeneview) and Erin Cane (Springboro), who posted an 8-0 win over Collyn Weaver and Meredith Wedell.

“Michelle and Erin really played well today, in doubles and singles action,” Carmack said.

Wilmington won four of the six singles matches to overcome the early deficit.

Jessica VanWinkle (Vickery/Floyd Central, Ind.) was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Elizabeth McLaughlin at No. 1.

At the No. 2 position, Cane fell behind early, but recovered to beat Michelle Guy, 6-4, 6-1.

Reiber posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Wedell at No. 3.

Jordan VanWinkle (Vickery/Port Clinton) sealed the win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Weaver at No. 4.

The Quakers will travel to Berea to face Baldwin-Wallace in OAC play at 1 p.m. Friday.
