Killian Cummings and the Quakers lost to Marietta in both teams' OAC openers.
Wilmington College dropped a 9-0 decision to Marietta in Ohio Athletic Conference men’s tennis action Saturday afternoon.
The Quakers are 0-1 in the OAC, 0-2 overall. Marietta moves to 1-0 in conference play, 2-2 for the season.
“It was our first match of the spring, so we are knocking some rust off,” Wilmington head coach Brian Lawhon said. “Plus, we have some injuries and illness, so we had a lot to contend with today.”
Marietta set the tone early by sweeping play in doubles competition.
Connor LaVelle (Athens) and Dylan Swormstedt (Blanchester) lost, 0-8, to Teddy Daub and Asher Saperstein at No. 1 doubles. At the No. 2 position, Justin Moore (Washington Court House) and Charles Hirtzinger (Troy) dropped a 3-8 decision to Ryan Wong and Mike Carpenter. Killian Cummings (Cincinnati/Colerain) and Josh Kincaid (Loveland/Goshen) were defeated by Dave Koscielny and Taimur Ahmed at No. 3 doubles, 4-8.
“There were some very positive things on the doubles courts,” Lawhon said. “Our number 2 and 3 teams played very well together.”
In singles action, Cummings and Saperstein played the tightest match at the No. 2 position, with Cummings falling, 4-6, 1-6.
“Marietta played well. They are a much-improved team,” Lawhon said. “I know our guys are going to go back to work next week and continue to compete.”
The Quakers will host Mount Union in OAC play at 2 p.m. April 2.
