WILMINGTON – The Wilmington women’s basketball team suffered through an eight minute scoring drought and shot just 19 percent from the field in losing Saturday to No. 12 Hope, 64-37, in the championship game of the Hampton Inn/Damon’s Tip-Off Tournament at Fred Raizk Arena in Hermann Court.

Sophomore Spencer Robles (Clyde, OH/Clyde) helped get Wilmington going early with seven straight points allowing the Lady Quakers to take its only lead of the game at 12-10. Robles, along with senior Bria Eslick (Cleveland Heights, OH/Lutheran East), were named to the All-Tournament team.

“Spencer had a great weekend,” said WC head coach Jerry Scheve. “She was able to get some confidence in herself. But, I was the happiest with the way she defended this week.”

With the momentum seemingly sporting the white Wilmington jersey, the case of missed free throws and the Hope length disrupted the WC offense.

The Lady Quakers missed seven free throws and eight layups during the aforementioned scoring drought which enabled Hope to push its lead to nine points. The lead ballooned to 13 at halftime, and Wilmington couldn’t get the lead to under double figures.

“We competed really well in the first half,” said Jerry Scheve. “We just missed six straight free throws and a couple of layups, and you can’t do that against a great team like Hope. Still with doing that, we were still in the game. I thought they started to let the misses get to them.”

Despite the inability to stay close in the second half, Scheve was pleased with his team in the second 20 minutes.

“I thought we executed better in the second half than in the first,” said Scheve. “Hope just executed a little better.”

Robles finished with a team-high 10 points, marking just the third time she has reached double figures in her career. Sophomore Courtney Tucker (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) added seven points, while Eslick pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. It was the second straight game the senior led Wilmington in rebounds.

The road doesn’t get any easier for the Lady Quakers as they travel to No. 4 DePauw 3 p.m. Wednesday.
