Spalding takes two from WC
March 17, 2012
Chelsea Morrow had one of Wilmington's seven hits in the Quakers' game-two loss to Spalding.
Wilmington College dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Spalding University at the WC Softball Complex Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles took game one, 1-0, and finished the sweep with a 6-2 win in game two.
The Quakers are now 6-8 on the season while Spalding improves to 5-5.
The opener was a pitchers’ duel between Wilmington’s Danielle Monnier (Houston) and Spalding’s Rena Philpot.
Monnier held the Golden Eagles to four hits, but one of them was a Katie Phillips homer to lead off the seventh inning.
The Quakers managed two hits, singles off the bats of Kerri Cunagin (Circleville/Teays Valley) and Olivia Hutchison (Mason).
Despite their quiet bats, the Quakers managed to get runners on base in six innings. Clutch hits, however, were not delivered as Wilmington stranded nine.
In game two, Spalding again used the long ball to open a gap. A two-run homer in the third inning got the Golden Eagles on the board, and three more runs in the fifth put Wilmington in a 5-0 hole.
Catlin Shilling (Waverly) led off the Wilmington fifth with a double to center field and eventually scored on a Kelsey Becker (Clarksville, Ind.) sacrifice fly.
Spalding plated an insurance run in the seventh to go up, 6-1.
Shilling’s second double of the game got Wilmington’s seventh inning rolling. The sophomore advanced to third on an Erika Lee (Blanchester) single, and scored when pinch runner Kaci Locke (Nashport/Licking Valley) was thrown out attempting to steal second base.
Shilling paced Wilmington’s seven-hit attack. Brooke Byrne (Wilmington), Allie Holstein (Ashville/Teays Valley), Jess Clutter (Englewood/Northmont), Lee and Chelsea Morrow (South Vienna/Northeastern) all contributed base hits.
The Quakers will play a pair of games at Wittenberg Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
