The Wilmington College baseball team opened Ohio Athletic Conference action Saturday, and was swept by the Heidelberg Student Princes, 15-0 and 14-2, at Tewksbury-Delaney Field.

“We faced a really good OAC team today that is going to finish in the top of the conference this season,” said head coach Tony Haley. “We showed our youth at times today, and we just didn’t really answer the bell.”

Wilmington managed just one hit in the opener – a single by Hunter Justus (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) in the fourth inning. The Quakers didn’t get a runner past first until the seventh inning, and recorded just four base runners the whole game.

After scoring in just one of the first three innings, the Student Princes tacked on multiples runs over the final four frames – including a five spot in the top of the seventh inning.

Justus (1-4) took the loss, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) over 5 1/3 innings. He yielded nine hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

The Quakers produced a run in the third inning thanks to a one-out single by Justus. Freshman Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami) opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a stolen base. A single by freshman Bryce Bean (Lees Creek, OH/East Clinton) put runners on the corners for the Justus single. But, the Wilmington rally stalled at a run.

Bean, who finished with three of the team’s six hits, scored Wilmington second run of the game in the seventh inning, sprinting home on a wild pitch.

Heidelberg scored seven runs over the first three innings, and then put the game away with seven more runs in the final three innings.

Freshman Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro) fell to 0-2 on the season, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits in six innings of action. Sophomore Tommy Chamberlain (Trenton, OH/Edgewood) was effective on the mound, allowing just one hit in 1 1/3 innings.

Wilmington (3-15 overall, 0-2 OAC) returns to the diamond 1 p.m. Tuesday with an OAC doubleheader against Muskingum.
