Erik Svensson placed second in the long jump at the All-Ohio Championship.
GAMBIER — Wilmington College was low in numbers, but high in performance as the Quakers competed at the All-Ohio Championship, hosted by Kenyon College Saturday.
The Quakers finished 10th overall with 22 points. Ohio Wesleyan won the 18-team event with 106 points.
“I’m happy with the people that competed. We didn’t take a lot of people to this meet, but the people that were here had a great day,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said.
Erik Svensson (Falkenbergs, Sweden/Falkenbergs Gymnakieskola) had a big day for the Quakers, finishing second in the long jump with a leap of 22-3.5. The freshman also placed seventh in the triple jump with an effort of 41-10.5.
“Erik really had a coming out party. He did a great job,” Combs said.
Mitch Howard (Germantown/Valley View) triple-jumped 43-2.25 to finish fourth overall.
Josh Richardson (Hamilton/North College Hill) finished third in the 55-meter hurdles with a 7.88 time.
Mason Metts (Pomeroy/Meigs) fired the shot put 46-4.75 to finish eighth and was 11th in the weight throw with a best effort of 46-6.25.
“We were low in numbers, but high in quality,” Combs said. “We’ve done a lot of training the past two weeks and our kids are not fresh right now. We came in and still competed well today. I’m excited to see what the next two weeks bring when we start cutting back.”
