DELAWARE — Wilmington College hit the water for the first of two days in the Corbiere/Merion Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday.

The Quakers are in fifth place heading into Sunday’s final events. Ohio Wesleyan is atop the team standings.

“I think this is a great meet for us,” Wilmington head coach Trip Breen said. “At this time of year we are training hard and have a lot of academic pressure. To be able to come in have everybody swimming so well is actually more than I imagined. A lot of things are starting to come together.”

Corbin Hellwarth (Celina/Parkway) set the water on fire with a PR in-season time in the 100-yard breaststroke.

“It almost becomes an expectation. When you see the preparation Corbin puts in, you know that he is going to excel. And it doesn’t matter if it’s swimming, academics or whatever, he does, he gives complete dedication to.”

Mason Harris (Westerville/Westerville Central) came up big in the 100 freestyle, touching in 51.5.

Mason swam two sprint events today,” Breen said. “He definitely showed up in the 100 free. He had a really slow start, but in Mason Harris-style had an almost even split 100 freestyle. That’s something a sprinter doesn’t ever want to do, but it fits Mason’s style of swimming. I was definitely impressed with the speed that he has.”

Competition in the Corbiere/Merion Invitational will resume at 10 a.m. Sunday.
