Wilmington College’s home opener did not go according to script as Wittenberg blasted the Quakers, 28-5, at Tewksbury-Delaney Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Quakers are now 3-10 on the season while the Tigers improve to 14-7.

For a second straight night, errors played a big role in a Wilmington loss. The Quakers committed five errors that led to 16 unearned runs — a recipe for disaster that started with seven unearned runs in a 9-run Wittenberg second inning.

The Quakers got a run in the third inning on back-to-back doubles from Jake Vinkovich (Circleville) and Xavier Jordan (Springfield/Shawnee).

Wilmington scored twice in the seventh and two more in the ninth, one of which was delivered by a Dan Conroy (Columbus/Centennial) two-base hit.

The Quakers hit the ball well at times and hit into trouble at other times — as evidenced by the season-high five double plays Wilmington hit into.

Brandon Arehart (Wilmington) and Jordan had two hits apiece.

Wilmington will open Ohio Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader at Heidelberg Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
