MARIETTA — A record-setting performance by the distance medley relay team highlighted Wilmington College’s appearance in the Ohio Athletic Conference South Split meet, hosted by Marietta College Saturday.

The Quakers finished third with 119 points. Marietta won the team title with 145.

Alek Erwin (Springfield/Northeastern), Jake Simpkins (Germantown/Valley View), Brad Kline (Circleville) and Pat Carroll (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian) finished second in the DMR in team-record time of 10:37.47.

“I think we can go a lot faster than we went today,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said. “We broke the record, but I think we can go 10 to 15 seconds faster than we went today. That’s a good team, and they expect to go faster.”

Erwin won the 1,000-meter run, hitting the line in 2:41.88.

“Alek has definitely stepped up his game for the indoor season. He worked hard over break and has come back in good shape. Today was just another step for him and his confidence. We talked about winning races today — we weren’t really concerned with times. He did a nice job,” Combs said.

Rob King (Washington Court House/Miami Trace) won the mile in 4:37.56.
Carroll finished second at 3,000 meters and Myles Corcoran (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) was third at 5,000 meters.

Mason Metts (Pomeroy/Meigs) continued to roll in the field. The junior won the shot put with a best effort of 49-6 ¼ and finished second in the weight throw with an effort of 49-9 ¾.

“Mason is off to a great start,” Combs said. “I know that he really wants to keep it going, too.”

Combs said he likes the look of his team.

“We’ve got a lot of good people in a lot of different events. We just need a little more depth. We were in the hunt today. I don’t think we loaded up our kids as much as some of the other teams did, so I think we can compete with everybody that was at this meet today when we seem them at the OAC meet,” Combs said.
