Seniors Tyler Scheid, Mark Fernandez and Josh Ward competed in their final home OAC dual.
Wilmington dropped a 118-67 decision to Mount Union in an Ohio Athletic Conference dual swimming meet at the WC Natatorium Saturday afternoon.
“The kids did swim pretty well and some of the kids really surprised me. They’ve been paying their dues all season training-wise, but it just hasn’t happened for them in a meet yet. Today, it happened for them in a meet.” Wilmington head coach Trip Breen said.
One of the step-up performances was turned in by sophomore Cody Skinner (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls).
“Cody did a great job for us,” Breen said. “He had a nice 400 and came back the next event, the 200 breaststroke, and had a great effort.”
Corbin Hellwarth (Celina/Parkway) continued to dominate the breaststroke with an easy win at 200 meters. Hellwarth also touched third in the 200 IM.
Alex Fout (Westerville) finished second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 free.
Seniors Mark Fernandez (Milford), Tyler Scheid (Loveland/Milford) and Josh Ward (Sidney) competed in their final home OAC meet for the Quakers. Their contributions to the program were not lost on their coach.
“These kids have been consistent and they have been committed,” Breen said. “I don’t know if we have ever had a class that has been this loyal to the program. Josh and Tyler have actually graduated — they didn’t have to stick around. Josh Ward has a full-time job, but he wanted to stay with the team. That’s the kind of commitment that I really appreciate.”
