Josh Kincaid and the Quakers dropped their fall season opener to Mount St. Joseph.

Wilmington College lost to Mount St. Joseph, 7-2, in non-conference men’s tennis action on the Quakers’ courts Tuesday afternoon.

The Quakers are 0-1 for the fall season while the Lions move to 1-0.

“This was our first match and it looked like it at times. But I am very excited about this team,” Wilmington head coach Brian Lawhon said. “These guys are so young and really want to win. We’re not in shape right now, but when we get in shape and start hitting, we might surprise some people.”

Justin Moore (Washington Court House/Washington Senior) had a big opening day for the Quakers. The sophomore posted wins on the singles and doubles courts. Moore defeated Price Combs at No. 5 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7). Moore also teamed with Charles Hirtzinger (Troy) to post an 8-5 win over Combs and Evan Lolli at No. 3 doubles.

“Justin had a big day,” Lawhon said. “I’m excited for him. Over the summer, he lost weight and gained muscle. He’s an athlete.”

Two of Wilmington’s singles losses went three sets. Killian Cummings (Cincinnati/Colerain) lost to Tyler Esham at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 0-1 (3-10). Josh Kincaid (Loveland/Goshen) dropped his No. 4 singles match to Max Withrow, 6-4, 6-7 (4-6), 0-1 (8-10).

In other singles action, Connor LaVelle (Athens) lost to Colin Barrett at the No. 1 position, 1-6, 4-6. Dylan Swormstedt (Blanchester) dropped a 1-6, 2-6 decision to Clayton Steinriede at No. 2. At No. 6, Jon Asher (Loveland/Goshen) was topped by Lolli, 2-6, 4-6.

In doubles play, LaVelle and Swormstedt lost, 1-8, to Barrett and Steinriede at the No. 1 position. At No. 2 doubles, Cummings and Kincaid held a 5-4 lead before Esham and Withrow rallied to win 8-5.

“I like this team and the attitude these guys have,” Lawhon said. “They like each other and they rally around one another. They are having fun. They are competing, and they are playing hard.”
