Connor LaVelle posted a win at No. 2 singles against Marietta.
Wilmington College dropped its spring home opener to Marietta by an 8-1 score in Ohio Athletic Conference action Monday afternoon.
The Quakers are now 0-3 in the OAC, 0-6 overall. Marietta moves to 1-0 in the conference, 6-1 for the season.
“It’s a learning process, and we are learning. We are getting better every day,” Wilmington head coach Terry Rupert said.
Wilmington built early leads in two of the three doubles matches as play got under way, but Marietta rallied to sweep play on the doubles courts.
At No. 1 doubles, Justin Arehart (Wilmington) and Josh Kincaid (Loveland/Goshen) dropped an 8-5 decision to Teddy Daub and Dave Koscielny.
At the No. 2 position, Connor LaVelle (Athens) and Jon Asher (Loveland/Goshen) lost to Eric Sturgis and Karl Grant, 8-3.
The No. 3 combination of Killian Cummings (Cincinnati/Colerain) and Cullen Corcoran (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) was edged, 9-7, by Tyler Pullekines and Ryan Gontero.
Wilmington’s lone win was provided by LaVelle at No. 2 singles. The junior defeated Koscielny, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
“That match is exactly what our whole team needs to do. We need to hang in, play tough and believe in ourselves,” Rupert said.
The Quakers will hit the OAC highway for a 1 p.m. match at Heidelberg Saturday.
