Marie Granstrom and the Quakers dropped their opener to Wittenberg.
SPRINGFIELD — Wilmington College opened the women’s tennis season with a 9-0 loss at Wittenberg Saturday morning.
“The ladies did a good job today. I know they all felt like they were working out a little bit of nerves and some kinks in their games, but they are really excited about getting to play again in a couple weeks and come out and not be so fresh anymore,” Wilmington head coach Kara Grasty said.
Wittenberg opened play by sweeping the three doubles matches and finished the win by taking all six singles matches.
The tightest match came at No. 3 singles, where Jessica Veite (Loveland) dropped a 3-6, 2-6 decision to Georgia Bennett.
“Jessica fought really hard today,” Grasty said. “She had a hard time getting started, but once she got her foot in the door she did really well.”
In doubles action, Marie Granstrom (Burtrask, Vasterbotten, Sweden/Adalsskolan) and Jessica VanWinkle (Vickery/Floyd Central, Ind.) lost, 2-8, to Leah Ann Miller and Anne Beauch at the No. 1 position.
