Thompson, Fernandez pace Quakers

Casey Thompson won two events to help Wilmington post a win over Franklin.

Wilmington College posted a 72-41 win over Franklin College in a non-conference men’s swimming dual meet at the WC Natatorium Saturday afternoon.

“Overall, we swam much better today than we did Friday against Alma,” Wilmington head coach Trip Breen said. “Maybe it was a combination of being 48 hours away from a 20-hour bus ride and just shaking some rust off yesterday. We competed well today.”

Freshman Casey Thompson (Liberty Township/Lakota East) had one of the meet’s top performances with wins in the 100-meter backstroke and the 200 individual medley.

“I don’t think that Casey is really aware of how good that he can be,” Breen said. “He probably wouldn’t have considered the 100 backstroke one of his favorite events when he came to Wilmington, but he just keeps getting better. He also raced remarkably well in the IM.”

Senior Mark Fernandez (Milford) was in on a pair of wins, touching first in the 400 freestyle and teaming with Cody Skinner (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls), Galen Carrington (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) and Tyler Scheid (Loveland/Milford) to win the 200 IM relay.

“Mark had a strong meet. He had a nice IM and came back with a good 400,” Breen said. “Maybe the training is kind of settling in with our distance swimmers. Josh Shell had a great 800 free for himself.”

The Quakers will return to action on Jan. 22 when Mount Union visits the Wilmington College campus for an Ohio Athletic Conference dual.
