Using small ball tactics, including three suicide squeezes, the Otterbein Cardinals swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from Wilmington Tuesday, 5-3 and 9-3, at the Wilmington Softball Complex.

“Otterbein was able to exploit some things offensively that we will have to work on and get better at,” said head coach Beth Floyd. “We have six more games this week, and we will be better at our defensive execution.”

Junior Catlin Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly) continued her homerun barrage, hitting one in each game to tie the WC single-season record of eight. She has four longballs in the last three games for Wilmington.

Otterbein jumped out to a five-run lead with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth. Thanks in part to three errors in the innings, the Cardinals tallied three unearned runs.

Wilmington got on the board in the sixth inning on Shilling’s two-out bomb to left field, then added two more as sophomore Jess Clutter (Englewood, OH/Northmont) added a two-run shot in the seventh inning. It was Clutter’s first plate appearance of the season, and her first career homerun. The Lady Quakers continued to battle in the final inning, bringing the tying run to the plate. However, their threat ended with a ground ball back to the pitcher.

Senior Brooke Byrne (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) had her career-long 16-game hitting streak come to an end, going 0-for-3.

Junior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) was the tough luck loser, falling to 7-3 on the season. She allowed two hits, both to the OC leadoff hitter, in allowing five runs (three earned) over seven innings. Monnier also recorded seven strikeouts.

Wilmington took the lead in the bottom of the first inning of the second game as Byrne’s single scored junior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) from second. However, the lead was short-lived as the Cardinals tallied two runs in the top of the second.

Shilling connected a two-run blast in the third inning to help WC reclaim the one-run advantage.

But, Otterbein ended the game scoring the final seven runs of the game in the last three innings to secure the sweep.

Byrne recorded four of WC’s eight hits, all singles, in the loss.

Clutter (5-5) took the loss, allowing nine runs (eight earned) in 6 1/3 innings. She yielded nine hits with four strikeouts.

Wilmington (16-8 overall, 2-6 OAC) steps away from OAC action 3:30 p.m. Thursday as the Lady Quakers host Mount St. Joseph.
