WILMINGTON – The Wilmington College men’s cross country finished fourth in the 2012 Ohio Athletic Conference championships Saturday. It was the highest OAC finish ever for the men’s program, beating the fifth place finish in 2001.

“I was impressed with how they guys came together and competed,” said head coach Ron Combs. “I thought our best day we would be fourth. It was a good step up from last season when we finished seventh.”

Mount Union had three of the top sixth finishers to win the meet, followed by Ohio Northern and John Carroll.

Junior Alek Erwin (South Vienna, OH/Northeastern) barely missed first team All-OAC honors, finishing in tenth place with a time of 26:10.0. He was 2.5 seconds away from earning ninth place and first team laurels.

“I thought we was a little two aggressive at the start,” said Combs. “We went into the woods ninth and only one runner passed him.
“He is very focused and a different athlete now than he was a year ago. He worked hard in the summer and seasons are made in the summer. He is reaping those benefits.”

Sophomore Myles Corcoran (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) also earned second team All-OAC honors with his 15th place finish with a time of 26:18.8.

Sophomore Rob King (Washington Court House, OH/Miami Trace) was the third Quaker across the line, placing 26th in a time of 26:41.1. Junior Brad Kline (Circleville, OH/Circleville) finished the meet in 34th place with a time of 26:54.9, while senior Chad Hirschauer (Cincinnati, OH/Milford) rounded out the Wilmington scoring with a 48th place finish in a time of 27:15.1.
