WILMINGTON – For the final 20 minutes of the game, the Wilmington College men’s soccer team applied tremendous pressure on the Muskingum defense with seemingly no results.

However, the continued stress on the Muskie defense finally netted results in overtime as freshman Jesse Buhrman (Westlake, OH/Westlake) beat the goalkeeper 51 seconds into the extra session to lift Wilmington to the 1-0 victory in both team’s Ohio Athletic Conference opener Saturday at Charlie Gilhart Field.

“We had all of our goal scorers in the game, and it was a freshman defender that scored,” said WC head coach Bud Lewis. “We had an overlapping run and he kind of got behind the defense and toe poked the ball over the goalkeeper.”

The game’s only tally was set up by a nice feed from junior Henrik Hornnaess (Brumunddal, Norway/Hamar Katerdralskole). It was Hornnaess’ first game back with the team after missing the previous game with a family issue.

Hornnaess teamed with sophomore Dan Wicks (Cincinnati, OH/Reading) and sophomore Evan Schlagetter (Sidney, OH/Sidney) to help Wilmington seize control of the midfield and ultimately the match.

“We figured out how to get the balls to our forwards,” said Lewis. “We just lacked some composure when we struck balls at the goal.”

Junior Antonio Trujillo (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) recorded four saves in posting the shutout, although he deflected some of the credit in the team huddle following the emotional win when he said “this is a team shutout.”

Wilmington (6-4 overall, 1-0) has won three straight matches, and will face Heidelberg 7 p.m. Tuesday.
