BEREA — Baldwin-Wallace rode the wave of a 25-8 game-ending run to hand Wilmington College a 77-56 setback in Ohio Athletic Conference women’s action Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Lady Quakers to 5-7 in the OAC, 10-9 overall. Baldwin-Wallace improves to 7-5 in the conference, 12-7 for the season.

The Lady Quakers came rolling out of the gate to build a 12-3 lead in the opening 6:30. Bria Eslick (Cleveland Heights/Lutheran East) and Brianna Peters (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) scored 10 points each in the opening half, but the Yellow Jackets climbed back into the game and took a 36-30 halftime lead.

“We came out and played with a lot of energy throughout the first half,” Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve said. “We didn’t do some things as well as we needed to, particularly boxing out. We really got hurt by their offensive rebounds and didn’t pressure the ball like we need to. What we did do was play with a lot of effort.”

Wilmington stayed within striking distance as the second half unfolded. Eslick hit a pair of free throws at 15:26 to cut the deficit to 40-38.

When Eslick connected with 8:11 to play, Wilmington was within four points at 52-48.

Down the stretch, Wilmington hit the wall and Baldwin-Wallace caught fire. The Yellow Jackets scored 15 of the next 19 points to go up, 67-52, with 3:35 to play.

“I think around the 10-minute mark, fatigue got to us a little bit, and we didn’t handle that part of the game very well,” Scheve said. “We started turning the ball over easier than we should, took some bad shots and didn’t finish the game like we should have.”

Eslick led all scorers with 18 points and pulled down team-high eight rebounds. Peters added 14 points.

“Bria and Brianna kept us in the game in the first half. They both played hard, as our entire team did.”

Makenzie Wippel (Orient/Westfall) scored 10 points and collected seven rebounds. Shelby Kies (Maineville/Kings) scored four points and dished out six assists.

The Lady Quakers will host Marietta in OAC play 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1.
