DePauw University overcame a nine-point second-half deficit Wednesday to edge Wilmington, 64-59, in the championship game of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament, presented by Hampton Inn & Suites and Damon’s Grill.

The No. 9 Tigers are now 8-1 on the season while the Lady Quakers drop to 7-3.

“This was probably our best game of the year, in terms of the way we competed, the way we defended, the way we played and the way we shot the ball,” Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve said. “DePauw is a great team. I told the team after the game that DePauw is ranked ninth in the nation, but I believe they are better than that.”

LeAnn Topp (New Bremen) provided an early spark as Wilmington jumped out to a 9-2 lead. The Lady Quakers never trailed in the first half and went to the break with a 26-19 lead.

Brianna Peters (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) opened the second half with a bucket that pushed Wilmington up, 28-19. DePauw, though, erupted for 12 unanswered points to take its first lead of the game, 31-28, with 15:46 to play.

“We knew they were going to come out and compete. We just couldn’t get anything going,” Scheve said. “We just didn’t get it done for a few minutes and got down.”

DePauw stretched its advantage to 44-34 at 9:17, but Wilmington scratched its way back into the game and pulled within 46-44 when Bria Eslick (Cleveland Heights/Lutheran East) hit a pair of free throws at 5:28.

DePauw looked to tournament MVP Katie Aldrich down the stretch, and the senior forward did not disappoint. Aldrich handed out two assists and hit a key jumper at 2:54 that moved the Tigers into a 55-47 lead.

Shelby Kies (Maineville/Kings) connected twice from downtown as Wilmington stayed within striking distance down the stretch, but DePauw hit six straight free throws to ice the win.

Eslick led Wilmington with 14 points, thanks to 12-for-12 shooting from the foul line. As a team, Wilmington was a perfect 18-of-18 from the stripe.

Topp scored 12 points and joined Eslick on the All-Tournament Team. Kies scored 13 points.

Wilmington will face Brescia at noon Dec. 29 in first-round play of Wittenberg University’s Charles B. Zimmerman Classic.
