UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — Haley Howard’s 3-pointer at the end of regulation found the bottom, but did not beat the buzzer as Wilmington College dropped a 71-68 decision to John Carroll in Ohio Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Quakers are now 4-3 in the OAC, 9-5 overall. John Carroll moves to 2-5 in the conference, 5-8 for the season.

Wilmington played from behind most the game, thanks in part to a sluggish first half that ended with the Lady Quakers trailing, 38-31.

“We defended very poorly and didn’t shoot well in the first half. That put us in a hole at halftime,” Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve said. “I thought we played better on both ends of the floor in the second half. We kept battling back, but we missed too many shots and had too many turnovers at key moments.”

Despite their shooting woes, the Lady Quakers went on a 21-8 run to take a 56-55 lead with 9:35 to play. Sophomore Bria Eslick (Cleveland Heights/Lutheran East) keyed the run with seven points.

Wilmington held what proved to be its final lead of the game when LeAnn Topp (New Bremen) scored in the paint to make the score 62-60 at 5:09.

Turnovers were killers down the stretch as Wilmington committed six of their eight second-half turnovers in game’s final 4:30.

“We just made some poor decisions that cost us,” Scheve said. “We did a lot of things well today, but you can’t turn the ball over that many times and make poor decisions on shots down the stretch and expect to win.”

Despite the turnover saga, Wilmington still had a chance to send the game to overtime. Howard (Uhrichsville/New Philadelphia) cut the deficit to 70-68 with a lay-in with 11 seconds to play. After John Carroll’s Emily Day hit one of two free throws, Makenzie Wippel (Orient/Westfall) rebounded Day’s miss and found Howard. The sophomore hit a 3-pointer, but didn’t get the shot off before the final horn sounded.

Eslick and Wippel both notched double-doubles. Eslick scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds while Wippel finished with 12 points and 10 boards.

Brianna Peters (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) added 13 points and seven boards. McKenzie Kilburn (Huber Heights/Wayne) scored 10 points.

“Bria was a big part of our getting back into the game in the second half, particularly the way she went to the offensive board. That was big,” Scheve said. “Brianna was solid in the second half, as well. Courtney Tucker gave us a nice lift off the bench.”

Wilmington dominated the glass, pulling down 53 rebounds — 25 of which came off the offensive glass — to John Carroll’s 34. The Lady Quakers finished with 25 offensive rebounds and committed 14 turnovers to 15 for the Blue Streaks.

Wilmington will stay on the road to face Ohio Northern at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Polar Bears dropped an 85-71 decision to Mount Union in a battle for the OAC top spot Saturday.
