KENT/BEXLEY — Brad Kline shattered the Wilmington College indoor mile record at Kent State University’s Golden Flashes Gala Saturday.

Kline (Circleville) finished third overall in the mile run with a time of 4:25.07 that bettered Austin Stiles’ 2009 record by nearly 2 seconds.

“The thing I was most impressed with was that Brad ran the mile, the 800 and the 4x4 and looked good in all three races,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said. “That’s really what we are looking for, an ability to run well in more than one race in a meet. Brad showed that today. I’m really excited about the way he started off the season.”

Alek Erwin (Springfield/Northeastern) finished fifth in the mile with a time of 4:32.38.

The Quaker men and women posted 10 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship qualifying marks at Kent.

“That was the biggest thing we were looking for, to get some OAC qualifying marks,” Combs said. “The records were icing on the cake, but icing we are very proud of. We accomplished a lot this weekend, and hopefully the excitement from this weekend will bring some motivation over Christmas break to keep working hard and see what we can do.”

Several other Wilmington athletes saw action in Capital University’s Purple and White Invitational. On that list was freshman Graham Morgan, who won the pole vault with a best effort of 14-5.5.

“That’s a great meet right out of the chute,” Combs said. “It’s really nice to be back in the pole vault game on the men’s side because we didn’t have anybody last year. Graham made an immediate impact, which is what we expected. (Assistant coach) Kyle Wolf is one of the best pole vault coaches in Ohio. I’m excited to see what he and Graham will be able to accomplish.”

Freshman Derek Kilgo (Charlotte, N.C./North Royalton) finished second in the 60-meter dash and was fifth at 200 meters.

Michael Reavis (Huber Heights/Wayne) and Mason Metts (Pomeroy/Meigs) finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the weight throw. The pair also finished 11th and 12th, respectively in the shot put.
