The Book of Proverbs as depicted in the Hebrew Old Testament.
Research conducted over several semesters by Wilmington College’s John Parrett came to fruition when the Society of Biblical Research published the piece and accepted it for scholarly presentation.
Parrett, Kettering, is a junior majoring in history and religion/philosophy.
His paper, which is titled “Wisdom and the Living One: An Examination of Proverbs 8:35-36 and Thomas Logion 59,” was accepted for presentation in the undergraduate research section of the Society’s regional meeting held earlier this year in Bourbonnais, Ill.
It highlights the Gospel of Thomas and its relationship to the hypothetical “Q source” and the Gospel of John.
“In trying to explain the Gospel of Thomas, most scholars have looked at Thomas in relation to Gnostic works,” Parrett said. “However, I compare the Gospel of Thomas and its view of Jesus with Proverbs and its view of wisdom.
“This is to show that the Gospel according to Thomas is more easily understood in the context of the Jewish wisdom tradition rather than a Gnostic tradition.”
Dr. Stephen Potthoff, associate professor of religion/philosophy, was both impressed and pleased with Parrett’s findings and dedication to major undergraduate research.
“Having a paper accepted for presentation at the Society of Biblical Literature is a real accomplishment and honor,” he said.
