MARIETTA — Frigid second-half shooting cost Wilmington College as the Quakers dropped a 59-51 decision to Marietta in Ohio Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.

The loss drops Wilmington (8-5 OAC, 10-9 overall) into fourth place in the conference standings, a game behind third-place Marietta and two games behind Capital and John Carroll.

“We really didn’t play very well all night, but we had our opportunities to win this game,” Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt said. “We didn’t run very good offense and we didn’t make any shots, which is a bad combination when you are a pressing team that needs to score some baskets to get into your defense.”

Brandon Candella (West Chester/Lakota West) and Antonio Bowman (Columbus Whestone) combined for 15 first-half points as the Quakers grinded out a 27-24 lead at the break.

When Klarke Ransome (Richwood/North Union) hit from downtown with 13:44 to play, the Quakers were up, 40-33.

The balance of the game, though, was a nightmare as Wilmington scored just 11 points and Marietta took the win.

“You can’t expect to win too many games when you only score 11 points the last 13 minutes of the game,” Hunt said. “Not putting the ball in the hole really hurt us defensively. We need to make shots to get our press set. That didn’t happen in the second half.”

Candella finished with game-high 14 points while Bowman scored nine. R.J. Leppert (Liberty Township/Lakota East) added seven points.

The Quakers will host Mount Union at 3 p.m. Saturday. Wilmington squeaked out a 75-71 overtime win at Mount Union Dec. 17.

“Top to bottom, our league is as deep as it has been. It was a dogfight at their place, and there’s no question that they have gotten better,” Hunt said. “It’s going to be a tough challenge for us Saturday.”
