A Wilmington College fraternity collected some 1,500 pounds of canned goods and other nonperishable food items from local residents last Saturday (Nov. 16) in its annual fall food drive.

Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity donated three-quarters-of-a-ton of items to Sugartree Ministries’ Your Father’s Kitchen food pantry. This year’s haul of nonperishables eclipsed the group’s 2012 food drive total by more than 400 pounds.

The local chapter and all affiliates of the national fraternity are participating in this fall’s annual service project. Last year, Lambda Chi chapters collected 1.5 million pounds of items across the country. Feeding America is its corporate sponsor.

“We wish to thank all those that provided canned goods and other items for our food drive in support of Your Father’s Kitchen,” said fraternity vice president Noah Harris.

Also that day, Lambda Chi Alpha members assisted Mary Lou Holdren in setting up her well known holiday display of Disney characters that she has hand-painted over the years. This Christmas season will mark her 21st year in presenting the Randolph Street display for area children.
