BEXLEY — Wilmington College’s first-half struggles proved costly as the Lady Quakers dropped a 76-60 decision to Capital in Ohio Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.

Wilmington is now 5-6 in the OAC, 10-8 overall. Capital improves to 8-3 in the conference, 13-5 for the season.

Wilmington never led as Capital got ahead early and extended its advantage to 41-24 at halftime.

“At the start of the game, I don’t think we understood how hard we had to play in order to win,” Wilmington head coach Jerry Scheve said. “Capital really took the game to us in the first half, and we weren’t up to the challenge.”

The Lady Quakers battled back in the second half and cut the deficit to 11 points on five occasions, but Capital answered every challenge with a score to keep Wilmington at bay.

“I thought the second half was a completely different story. The second half is probably the best we have played all year, effort-wise,” Scheve said. “We were outstanding. Hopefully, we can learn something from that and carry it forward and built on it. I want our players to remember both the first half and the second half. It shows what can happen when your effort is not what it needs to be, and it shows how well we can play when we give the kind of effort we are capable of giving.”

Bria Eslick (Cleveland Heights/Lutheran East) led Wilmington with a double-double that included career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds.

“I hate to see someone described as having a career game, because I think that’s the kind of game that Bria can have on a consistent basis,” Scheve said. “If she does, we will have a lot of success. She was a dominant player tonight.”

Makenzie Wippel (Orient/Westfall) contributed 11 points. Brianna Peters (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) scored eight points and collected nine boards. LeAnn Topp (New Bremen) scored eight points, and Shelby Kies (Maineville/Kings) handed out game-high seven assists.
