More than 100 golfers enjoyed a summer Saturday on the links at Snow Hill Country Club Aug. 11, but birdies, pars and fun-filled fellowship represented only part of the story. They were there to pay tribute to Sharon Sims.

Sims retired this summer as a professor of health and physical education after 34 years on Wilmington College’s faculty and a coach of, at various times, seven sports, including being the founding coach of women’s golf.

The Alumni Association’s inaugural Sharon Sims Alumni and Friends Golf Scramble raised more than $4,000 toward an endowed scholarship at WC in Sims’ name.

“It’s overwhelming the love I’ve felt today,” Sims said as each of the scramble foursomes stopped on the scenic, par 3 12th hole to chat with her, take a team photo and have her hit a tee shot on the team’s behalf.

The 108 participants included many of her Wilmington College faculty and staff colleagues, former students and players, as well as family and friends from the area.

Beth Reichenbach Wood and Tara Rehrer, players from her first golf team, returned to Wilmington for the event.

“I wouldn’t miss this for anything,” said Wood, a member of WC’s Class of 2002. “Coach was an awesome coach and is still a great friend. She loves her players and we love her. She’s been a big inspiration in my life and is an all around great person.”

Rehrer recalled Sims always found ways to motivate her players and make golf fun.

“I wanted to come and see Sharon today,” she said, noting that she and Wood have remained friends and the golf outing provided an opportunity to relive some pleasant memories.

Following golf and the lunch, WC President Jim Reynolds expressed his appreciation to the golfers for paying tribute to Sims by supporting the golf outing and the Sharon Sims Endowed Scholarship fund.

“Sharon is a person that has lived out the values of integrity and excellence,” he said. “It is an honor to have been her colleague at Wilmington College, but it is even more so to be a friend.

Winning the tournament in the men’s division with a 15-under par score of 55 was the Merchants National Bank team of Blain Bergstrom, Ryan Weller, Eric Wise and Jared Haines. The team of Justin Martin, Kerry Wilkinson, Evan Houdieshell and Joe Mergler placed second with a 56.

In the mixed group, Sims’ former golf team members Wood and Rehrer paired with Josh Armstrong and Adam Johnson to score a winning 56, 14-under par. Second place went to the 11-under par team of Sue Zint, Mike Zint, Jimmy Vanzant and Tanner Vanzant.
