Fightin' Quakers open season ranked

August 22, 2012

WILMINGTON, OH – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) recently released their regional rankings, and for the first-time in school history, the Wilmington women’s team earned a preseason ranking.

“It’s exciting to open the season ranked in the top 10 in the Region,” said head coach Ron Combs. “It is the first time we have opened the season with a ranking, usually we have to work our way into the rankings as the season progresses. The important thing is to now go out and prove that we deserve that ranking and strive to be a top five team in our Region.”

The Fightin’ Quakers are ranked eighth in the Great Lakes region. Perennial favorite Calvin opens the season where they have finished in each of the past five years, on top. Two other Ohio Athletic Conference teams – Ohio Northern (third) and Baldwin-Wallace (sixth) – are also in the Top 10.

Senior Annie Cekada (Mineral Point, PA/Central Cambria) is coming off her second trip to the NCAA National meet, and is the only runner in WC history to qualify for the National meet. She is joined by fellow All-OAC honoree, sophomore Jenna Parlette (Miamisburg/Miamisburg) to help keep the Quakers in the upper echelon of the OAC.

Also back are Brittany Gibbons (Pleasant Plain/Blanchester) and Tricia Steffen (Baltimore/Liberty Union), who had a breakout freshman season in 2011.

Wilmington kicks off the 2012 season 10 a.m. September 1 when they compete in the Franklin Invitational.
