Fields earns measure of redemption

October 6, 2012

ALLIANCE, OH – Drew Fields’ freshman season came to a disappointing end against Mount Union last season when his own goal was the only marker of the game.

On Saturday, Fields (Terrace Park, OH/Mariemont) earned a measure of redemption as he had a hand in all three of Wilmington’s goals in the 3-2 overtime victory over the Purple Raiders. It was the third consecutive game that went more than 90 minutes for WC.

“Drew had his breakthrough game,” said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. “He is probably playing in the position we want him to play. Injuries forced us to play him as a defender. It’s our first time playing him as an attacking player.”

The sophomore scored twice, including the equalizer with one minute remaining in the game, and assisted on the game winner.

Four minutes after Mount Union claimed the lead with a goal in the 73rd minute, Fields made put his first imprint on the game. Junior Jeff Graham (Kettering, OH/Alter) played a ball to the backside of the goal that Fields was able to deposit from about eight yards out.

It didn’t take long for the Purple Raiders to reclaim the lead with less than 10 minutes left in the game. However, Wilmington wasn’t going to fold.

“The team showed a lot of courage and character,” said Lewis. “We played nice soccer at times against a hard-working, strong Mount Union team.”

With time running out on the Quakers, junior Henrik Hornnaess (Brumunddal, Norway/Hamar Katerdralskole) took Wilmington’s fourth corner kick and Fields headed it past the Mount keeper.

After scoring on the Fightin’ Quakers’ first two goals, Fields decided to share the gift of scoring with a teammate. He hooked with Graham for the game-winner four minutes into the second overtime period.

Wilmington (7-4-1), which hasn’t lost in five straight games, will continue its trek through the balanced OAC slate 4 p.m. Tuesday with a road game against Capital.
