Kristen Deutsch's eighth-place finish in the 500 freestyle highlighted Day One for Wilmington at the 2011 OAC Championship.
AKRON — Kristen Deutsch finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle as Wilmington College hit the water in the opening day of the Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship at University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium Thursday.
Wilmington is in fifth place with 17 points. Ohio Northern leads the team standings with 84 points.
“It’s a little bit of a mystery when you come to the conference championship,” Wilmington head coach Trip Breen said. “It’s an exciting part of the season, but you’re still just kind of figuring things out. We swam a little bit nervous this morning in the preliminaries, but we had some good swims tonight.”
Deutsch (Beavercreek) put Wilmington’s first point on the board with a 5:26.24 effort in the 500 freestyle. Her final time was more than a half-second faster than she swam in the prelims.
“Kristen had a nice swim. She raced well,” Breen said. “She may have tried a little bit too hard early in the race, and she paid for it in the end. But she raced well, and that’s all we ever ask.”
Julie Creech (Dayton/Centerville) finished second in the 500 freestyle consolation final. Her lifetime-best time of 5:23.97 was 6 seconds faster than her preliminary time.
Rachel Wasson (Nashport/Tri-Valley) had a strong day in the 50 freestyle with a 26.39 in the preliminaries and 26.75 in the consolation final.
Wilmington will return to action Friday in the middle day of the OAC meet — a day that has traditionally been a good one for the Quakers.
“I hope that is the case again this year,” Breen said. “I think we have people in races on Friday who are capable of giving us some good swims. This is what we have been working for and pointing toward.”
