WESTERVILLE — Wilmington College’s distance medley relay team flirted with a team record in a fifth-place performance at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship, hosted by Otterbein University Friday.
The Quakers scored 5 team points in the opening day of competition. Otterbein holds the lead with 38 points heading into Saturday’s final day of action.
Wilmington’s DMR quartet of Colleen Romeo (Pleasant Plain/Goshen), Anna Foote (Pleasant Plain/Goshen), Tricia Steffen (Baltimore/Liberty Union) and Jenna Parlette (Miamisburg) finished in 12:59.74.
“They ran a strong race. I think that was our fourth-fastest time ever. We were hoping for a top-five, but we knew it would take a strong effort to do so. They did a nice job,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said.
Liz Delehanty (Euclid/Villa Angela-St. Joseph) finished eighth in the pole vault with a 9-8 effort.
“Liz scores every meet. She wasn’t happy with how things went today, but she has made a lot of improvements from last year. She went from being a person that was trying to qualify for the conference meet last year to being a person who scored in the meet this year. Hopefully, she can be all-conference next year,” Combs said.
Brittany Gibbons (Pleasant Plain/Blanchester) was 10th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:00.76.
“We just have limited opportunities to score points. We need to make the most of those opportunities, and we didn’t really do that today. We need to bounce back strong Saturday,” Combs said.
