BEXLEY — Kerri Cunagin homered twice and drove in five runs as Wilmington College earned an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader split with a 5-3 game-two win over Capital University Sunday afternoon.

The Crusaders took the opener, 4-0.

Wilmington is now 5-9 in the OAC, 14-20 overall. Capital moves to 6-7 in the conference, 21-14 for the season.

“Kerri came up big for us today. She was confident and had a great approach when she went to the plate. She was selective, picked her pitch and came up huge for us,” Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said.

After being shut down on five hits in the opener, Wilmington got a much-needed lift from Cunagin (Circleville/Teays Valley) in the first inning of the nightcap. After Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) and Catlin Shilling (Waverly) reached via walks, Cunagin ripped a three-run home run to right-center field.

Capital chipped away at Wilmington’s lead with a run in the third inning. The Crusaders tied the game with two more runs in the home fourth.

The game went to the seventh inning tied at 3. Lunsford laced a one-out single and was bunted to second base by Shilling.

Cunagin delivered another bomb to right-center, and Wilmington was back on top, 5-3.

“Stacy Lunsford and Catlin Shilling did a great job of getting on base,” Floyd said. “The home runs mean something, but they mean even more when you have people on base.”

Jess Clutter (Englewood/Northmont) wiggled out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh inning to earn her sixth win of the season.

“Jess was outstanding. She did a great job of keeping them off-balance. She did made some big-time pitches in the seventh inning,” Floyd said.

Lunsford had three hits on the day and was on base five times in seven at-bats.

Cunagin also contributed three hits.

The Quakers will travel to Cincinnati to face Mount St. Joseph in a non-conference doubleheader Monday.
