Annie Cekada finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala.
KENT — Annie Cekada and Kelsey Stief turned in solid 5,000-meter performances as the indoor track and field season rolled into motion at the Kent State University Golden Flash Gala on Friday.
Cekada (Mineral Point, Pa./Central Cambria) opened with an 18:45.43 to finish fourth in the 5,000-meter run. Stief (Upper Sandusky) was eighth in 19:27.26.
“Annie did what Annie does. She is so workmanlike,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said. “She just came out and took care of business and ran a solid qualifier. We won’t have to worry about running the 5K again until the OAC Championship. Kelsey also ran a great race. I’m not sure Kelsey would have wanted to come to this meet last year, but she was excited about coming here. It’s still early in season, but you can see that she is very focused to finish her senior season with a bang. I know that she wants to be all-conference and break some records. She’s really hitting on all cylinders right now.”
Combs said his squad has made the physical and psychological transition from cross country to track and field.
“I think people probably think that our kids are more cross country than track runners, and some of our kids think that,” Combs said. “But we have a bunch of kids that are really dedicated and really excited about track. That’s exciting for me.”
