AUSTINTOWN — Wilmington College senior Pat Carroll and freshman Jenna Parlette have been named Ohio Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Runners of the Week, respectively, the league office announced today.
For Carroll (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian), the weekly OAC honor is his second of the season while Parlette (Miamisburg) garners her first OAC honor. Today’s news also marks the first time that Wilmington runners have received OAC men’s and women’s honors during the same week.
“They both have been very consistent all year and had great races last Friday. They are both very deserving,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said.
Carroll shattered the Wilmington College team record with a 25:25 at the WC Fall Classic. His fifth-place performance led Wilmington to a seventh-place team finish in the 26-team event.
“Pat really had some struggles with injuries and learning how to be a distance runner during his first two years at Wilmington,” Combs said. “With his work ethic and focus he has made himself an outstanding runner. He is still, though, one of the most overlooked guys in the OAC, and that has really motivated him. He is showing that he is for real and is going to stay.”
Parlette finished fourth overall at the WC Fall Classic, covering the 5k course in 18:43, the second-fastest time in team history. The Wilmington women finished third of 26 teams.
“We knew Jenna was going to help our team this season, but we didn’t think she would be up there pushing at the front of the pack every week,” Combs said. “She has been better than advertised, and she is getting better. When you fire the gun, she is going to give you everything she’s got. It’s been really fun to watch how she and Annie Cekada have worked together this year.”
