NEW ORLEANS — Pat Carroll and Annie Cekada have been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s All-Academic Teams, the coaches’ organization announced today.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA regional championships.
For Carroll (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian), the award caps a senior season to remember. An All-OAC, All-Great Lakes Region and Academic All-OAC honoree, Carroll maintains a 3.75 GPA as an international studies major.
“This is another accolade in a long line of accolades over the past two years for Pat. He has been such an outstanding leader for our team. He really sets a great example with the way he practices and the way he goes about his academic career,” Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said.
The national academic award is the third straight for Cekada (Mineral Point, Pa./Central Cambria). The junior also picked up her third straight All-Great Lakes Region and All-OAC honors in 2011 and qualified for her second NCAA Championship. Also an Academic All-OAC pick, Cekada is an animal science major with a 3.89 GPA.
“Any time there is a chance to excel at something — whether it’s in her classes, her work on campus or as an athlete — she excels,” Combs said. “I think a lot of that stems from her work ethic. She comes to work every day in the class and on the field, and just does an outstanding job.”
