Wilmington native William (Bill) Wisecup recalls his grandfather taking him as a boy to an art exhibit at Wilmington’s Hale Hospital that featured a retrospective exhibit of works by Dr. Kelly Hale. This was a catalyst for his lifelong interest in art.

Wilmington College’s Harcum Gallery is holding an exhibit of Wiscup’s works through Aug. 4. Normal gallery hours are weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by special appointment arranged by Hal Shunk, professor of art and curator of the venue.

For Wisecup, his pursuance of art has been a family affair. His family was supportive as local art teacher/mentor James McCarty encouraged him to explore various artistic media. Also, Wisecup’s artist wife, Pamela, and their children have continued to support his artistic endeavors.

He attended the Dayton Institute of Art for several years and, eventually, his work became so well known that it is included the private collections of persons throughout the world, including actor Vincent Price, singer/actor Rick Nelson, Nelson’s father and mother-in-law (Pierson and Peggy Davis), and Adeline Nall, who was actor James Dean’s mentor.

Among his numerous awards and recognition over the years, Wisecup won back-to-back Best of Shows at the Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors in 2009 and 2010.
