Berlin nets career-high in WC loss

MARIETTA – The Wilmington College men’s basketball team had their four-game winning streak come to an end as they fell to league-leader Marietta Saturday, 98-87, in Ohio Athletic Conference action at the Ban Johnson Arena.

Marietta had runs of 13-4 and 12-3 in the first and second half, respectively, to seize momentum in earning the victory. The Pioneers lead ballooned to as much as 22 in the second half and was down to 19 with 2:42 before Wilmington mounted a final charge.

Junior Jordan Berlin (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) scored eight points during the 12-2 run that pulled them to within nine points with 1:10 remaining. However, the home team hit their final eight free throws to hold the Fightin’ Quakers at bay.

The Pioneers shot 60 percent from the field in the second half, and 56 percent for the game, and dominated the rebounding battle, 44-27. Wilmington committed a season-low four turnovers, but couldn’t string stops together on the defensive end.

Berlin came off the bench to score a career-high 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while senior Brandon Candella (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) added 22 points in the loss. For the second time against Marietta, junior Malcolm Heard II (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) was saddled with foul trouble. He scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and finished with four rebounds.

Freshman Tre Stennett (Mount Vernon, OH/Westerville Central) turned in the best game of his young career with a five rebounds, three assists and three steals, all career and team-high’s.

Wilmington (8-9 overall, 5-5 OAC) will host Muskingum 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Fightin’ Quakers won the first meeting 84-69 on December 6.
