AUSTINTOWN — Senior defender Matt Bates has been named Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference, the league office announced today.
To qualify, a student-athlete must have maintained a 3.25 grade point average, be a sophomore academically and is in at least his second year of participation. He must also have been a starter or key reserve who has made a significant athletic impact. The conference’s faculty athletic representatives vote upon the recipients.
Bates (Cicero, Ind./Hamilton Heights) is a business administration/mathematics major with a 3.47 GPA. On the field, he was part of the Wilmington defense that paved the way for 11 victories this season.
“It’s a great honor and a very well-deserved honor for Matt,” Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis said. “He is an incredible young who has a lot of talent, both on the field and in the classroom. He is extremely active on campus and holds numerous leadership positions. He is so well-rounded and really typifies the experience of Division III athletics, where your involvement extends well beyond the playing field.”
