A combination of young and old enabled the Wilmington College baseball team to snap its 14-game losing streak Tuesday.

Freshman Billy Foster (Xenia, OH/Xenia), in his first career start, allowed two earned runs in seven innings and senior Jake Vinkovich (Circleville, OH/Circleville) slammed the door on some eighth inning trouble as the Quakers defeated Ohio Christian, 8-4, Tuesday at Tewksbury-Delaney Field in non-conference action.

In his tenth appearance this season, Foster yielded just two second-inning runs, while allowing just six hits, striking out three and walking two. Vinkovich earned his first save of the season, going two perfect innings. But, it wasn’t as easy as it seemed. Vinkovich came on in relief with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and one run already in. A ground ball out enabled another run to score, but he kept the Trail Blazers at bay by inducing an inning-ending double play.

Wilmington did the majority of its damage in a seven-run fourth inning. Sophomore Dan Conroy (Columbus, OH/Centennial) drove in a run with his first hit of the season, and the flood gates seemed to open.

Freshman Corey Walker (Hillsboro, OH/Hillsboro), with the help of an error, cleared the bases with a single. He was awarded two RBI on the play, and the third run scored on the two-base error. He scored on an RBI single by freshman Clay Cleaver (Pleasant Plain, OH/Little Miami). The final two runs of the inning came as Cleaver scored on a wild pitch and Vinkovich raced home as the pitcher misplayed the throw from the catcher following the wild pitch.

Cleaver, Conroy and Hunter Justus (Circleville, OH/Logan Elm) all had two hits, while Walker was 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Wilmington (5-28) will play its final home doubleheader of the season 1 p.m. Saturday as the Quakers host Mount Union.
