MUS100 INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC (3). An introduction to the fundamentals of music theory, historical styles, and ear training. Beginning keyboard, fretboard, and recorder techniques. Each Fall/Each Spring.
MUS130 MUSIC THEORY 1 (3). The study of Common Practice Period harmony and
elementary counterpoint, instrumental ranges and transpositions, and computer music
notation software. Prerequisite: MUS100 or permission of the instructor. Alternate years.
Spring 2006.
MUS160 PIANO CLASS 1 (2). Beginning piano in a class format. Each Fall/Each Spring.
MUS161 PIANO CLASS 11 (2). Continuation of MUS160. Prerequisite: MUS160 or
permission of instructor. Each Fall/Each Spring.
MUS162 WILMINGTON COLLEGE COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA (1). The Wilmington College Community Orchestra is open to string players (violin, viola, cello, and bass) by audition only or by permission of the conductor. The orchestra plays one formal concert per term plus the all-music department December Holiday Concert. Prospective players need to contact the conductor/instructor or designee to arrange an audition during the first week of classes. May be taken three times for credit. Not offered 2005-06.
MUS163 VOICE CLASS (2). Beginning voice class. Each Fall.
MUS165 WILMINGTON COLLEGE BAND (1). Open to all students by audition. One to two concerts each semester. May be taken three times for credit. Prerequisite: Prior experience in instrumental performance and permission of instructor. Each Fall/Each Spring.
MUS167 COLLEGE COMMUNITY CHORUS (1). Open to the entire campus and community. No audition is required. One major concert each semester. May be taken three times for credit. Each Fall/Each Spring.
MUS168 WILMINGTON COLLEGE CHORALE (1). Open to all students by audition or permission of the instructor; four to five performances, one major concert each semester and an annual tour. May be taken three times for credit. Each Fall/Each Spring.
MUS169 COLLEGIUM MUSICUM (1). Vocal and instrumental ensemble specializing in music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Frequent performances, annual tour; uses the Linglebach Collection of Historical Instruments. No previous experience required. May be taken three times for credit. Each Fall/Each Spring.
MUS175 JAZZ WORKSHOP (1). Small ensemble jazz group. Open to all students by audition or permission of instructor. May be taken three times for credit. Not offered 2005-06.

woodwinds, strings, brass, and/or specialized instrument training. May be taken three times for credit. ($160.00 fee.) Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Each Fall/Each Spring.
MUS200 MUSIC IN AMERICA (3). A survey of music in the United States from the Colonial period to the mid-20th century. Each Spring.
MUS201 MUSIC IN WORLD CULTURES (3). A survey of music in selected world cultures; specifically Sub-Saharan African, Central and South American, Middle Eastern Islamic, South Asian Indian, Japanese and Native American plus others at the discretion of the instructor. Each Spring.
MUS202 TOPICS IN MUSIC HISTORY (3). Survey of an era or culture to be announced each year. May be repeated when topics vary. Each Fall.
MUS230 MUSIC THEORY II (3). Continuation of MUS130. Advanced harmony, tonal
counterpoint, and analysis of materials from the 13th through the 20th centuries.
Prerequisite: MUS130 or permission of instructor. Offered by appointment as
needed.
MUS231 PERFORMANCE LEADERSHIP (3). Studies in choral and instrumental conducting, vocal pedagogy, and elementary orchestration. Offered as needed.
MUS318 SURVEY OF WESTERN MUSIC I - ANTIQUITY THROUGH THE AGE OF
ENLIGHTENMENT (3). A survey of the development of cultivated music in Europe and the Americas from the age of Charlemagne through the 18th century. The course focuses on the integration of music with the Humanities and other Fine Arts and the political, socioeconomic, philosophical, and religious aspects of each of the styles. The course emphasizes critical listening, analysis, and basic research techniques. No previous experience in formal music is required. Prerequisites: Junior or senior standing or permission of instructor. Alternate years. Fall 2005.
MUS319 SURVEY OF WESTERN MUSIC II - ROMANTICISM THROUGH THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (3). A survey of the development of Western cultivated music as a worldwide art form from Beethoven through the 1990's. The course focuses on the integration of music with the Humanities and other Fine Arts and the political, socio-economic, philosophical, and religious aspects of each of the styles. MUS330 PREPARATION OF PERFORMANCE MATERIALS (3). Arranging, composition, and advanced orchestration. Prerequisite: MUS231 or permission of instructor. Offered as needed.
MUS350 TOPICS IN MUSIC (3). This course explores a particular aspect of music history or contemporary music culture selected that semester. A variety of subjects will be covered including: topics that study a particular world of music and culture, topics in
musical technology, and contemporary popular music. Prerequisites: Junior or senior
standing or permission of the instructor. Offered as needed.
