Freudenberg closes career with win No. 76

May 1, 2010

URBANA — Wilmington College ended the men’s tennis season with an 8-1 loss to John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference match chased by rain to the Springfield Racquet Club Saturday afternoon.

Wilmington finishes the season 0-9 in the OAC, 0-14 overall. John Carroll improves to 6-3 in the conference, 6-6 for the season.

“We had a great crowd here to watch the match, probably the biggest crowd I’ve seen since I’ve been coaching here,” Wilmington head coach Brian Lawhon said. “It was nice to see. It really shows what people think of our kids and what they are all about.”

The lone win for Wilmington was provided by senior Joe Freudenberg (Mason/Kings), who closed out his illustrious career with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 decision over Ryan Mullaney at No. 1 singles.

Freudenberg rewrote the record book at Wilmington with a 45-11 career singles record. His 45 singles wins and 76 total wins are both team records.

“Joe had a tremendous career,” Lawhon said. “He has been the face of Wilmington tennis for the past four years. He plays at a different level. It was nice to see him go out with an exciting win.”

Freudenberg and Josh Kincaid (Loveland/Goshen) dropped a tough 6-8 battle to Mullaney and Chad Ruehs at No. 1 doubles. The match was tied at 6 before the Blue Streaks closed out with a service break and hold to notch the win.
