Quakers win first of season

Will Rey picks up first collegiate victory

(WC Press Release) Wilmington, OH (December 6, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quakers trailed 34-17 at halftime, but came out in the second half and scored 46 points to just 27 by Heidelberg to give the hosts their first victory of the season at 63-61.

David Guy (Webb City, Mo./Webb City) scored 18 points to lead three Quakers in double figures as head coach Will Rey picked up his first victory as the coach of the Green and White.

The Quakers trailed 34-17 after the first half, with the hosts shooting just 7-of-24 from the field and giving away 11 turnovers, as the Student Princes took a 17-point lead into the locker room.

In the second half the Quakers took just five and a half minutes to cut the deficit to single digits, eventually cutting the lead to six with 13:17 to play in the game. Heidelberg then went on a 9-0 run to take a 15-point lead with 10:27 to play. The Quakers kept chipping away at the deficit as the team took their first lead of the game with 2:44 to play when Josh Rohrbacher (Columbus/Beechcroft) found Guy on a back-cut. The two teams changed leads back and forth for the next minute before Stephen Gee (West Milton/Milton Union) hit a three-point basket with 1:15 to play, giving the hosts a two-point lead. The basket was the last of the game, as neither team could find the bottom of the net for the rest of the half.

Guy led the Quaker scorers with 18 points while Gee scored 16 and Deon Short (Cincinnati/Mt. Healthy) added 10. B.J. Gordon (Toledo/Scott) pulled down a team-best six rebounds while he, Rohrbacher and Luke Wolfinbarger (Franklin/Franklin) each gave out three assists. Wolfinbarger, in his first collegiate start, also grabbed a team-best four steals in the victory.

Heidelberg was led by Lucas Messer, who scored 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting while Nolan Edwards and Kenny Gilbert scored 12 and 10 points respectively. T.J. Johnson grabbed nine rebounds to Messer's eight while Gilbert gave out eight assists.

With the win the Quakers improve to 1-4 on the season and 1-0 in the OAC while Heidelberg falls to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

The next game for the Green and White is on Wednesday, December 10 when the team travels north to Ada, Ohio to face off against the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
