Quaker comeback falls short against John Carroll

David Guy scores season-high 22 points in loss

WILMINGTON – The Wilmington College Quakers fell to 11th ranked (D3hoops.com) John Carroll University on Saturday afternoon by a 94-82 score. The Quakers trailed by as many as 21 in the second half before coming to within nine in the 12-point loss.

The Quakers and Blue Streaks battled back and forth for the first 10 minutes of the game, as the two teams were tied at17 halfway through the period. The John Carroll defense tightened, as the team went on a 7-0 run over the next 30 seconds, while opening a 13-point lead with just under seven minutes to play. After the Quakers cut it to eight, the Blue Streaks used a 12-2 run to increase the lead to 18 before the visitors went into the locker room with a 17-point, 46-29 lead.

The Quakers cut the second half deficit to 10 with 16:39 to play before the Blue Streaks used another run, this one 11-0 to take their lead to 21 points at 62-41 with 14:33 left in the period. The Quakers started clawing back, cutting the deficit to as few as nine with 1:57 to play in the game, but was unable to come any closer in the 12-point loss.

David Guy (Webb City, MO/Webb City) led the way with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range. Eric Stirling (Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy) added 14 points while Fred Harrison (Cleveland/East) scored a career-high 12 points. Deon Short (Cincinnati/Mt. Healthy) and Stirling each pulled down six rebounds to lead the squad while five, Short, Zach Broermann (Brookville, IN/Franklin County), Josh Rohrbacher (Columbus/Beechcroft), Guy and Billy Nelson (Cincinnati/Shroder Paideia Academy) each dished out a pair of assists.

Brandon Mimes led the Blue Streaks with 24 points while Michael Grogan scored 21 and Peter Koch added 17.

With the loss, the Quakers fall to 2-4 on the year and 0-1 in the OAC while John Carroll improves to 5-0 overall, and 1-0 in league action.

The next game for the Green and White is on Wednesday, December 8 when the team plays host to Otterbein College with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
