Quakers fall in season opener

Team loses 80-67 in first round of tournament

(WC Press Release) Wilmington, OH (November 21, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quakers fell to tournament host North Central College in the season opener for both squads, 80-67. Stephen Gee (West Milton/Milton Union) led the way for the Quakers with 17 points and nine rebounds in the contest.

The Quakers scored first in the game, and held the lead until the 15:19 mark in the first half when the Cardinals tied the game at 10. North Central opened an 11-0 run to take a seven point lead with just under 11 minutes to play in the half before the Quakers fought back and took a two-point lead with six minutes to p lay in the half. The Quakers led by three with 1:47 in the opening half before the Cardinals used a 7-4 run to end the half with a two-point lead.

North Central came out firing in the second period, out-scoring the Quakers 15-4 to start the half as the Quakers were only able to cut the deficit to single digits twice in the period.

Gee led three Quakers in double figure scoring with 17 points while B.J. Gordon (Toledo/Scott) and David Guy (Webb City, MO/Webb City) scored 14 and 11 points respectively. Gee had a team-best nine rebounds while Mike Umpleby (Columbus/Centennial) dished out a team-high three assists.

North Central was led by Kevin Lambert who scored 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Josh Wesley and Mike Wilson scored 18 and 16 points respectively for the hosts.

The Quakers play on Saturday, November 22 against Palm Beach Atlantic University, who fell 93-50 to Lawrence University.
