ADA,
Ohio ‹ The Wilmington College Quakers snapped a seven-game
conference losing skid with a 60-54 victory over Ohio Northern
University in Ada on Wednesday evening.
Four
Quakers scored in double figures, led by Deon Short's (Cincinnati/Mt.
Healthy) 16 points.
The
game started as a defensive battle, with the Polar Bears holding
a 9-4 lead four minutes into the contest and held a three-point
lead with 11:07 to play before the visiting Quakers used a
14-3 run over the last 11 minutes of the half to take a 25-15
halftime lead.
The
run continued into the second half, as the Quakers started
the second half on a 13-3 run, taking a 20-point lead at 38-18
with 16:11 to play in the contest. The Polar Bears clawed
back to within five with 2:48 to play, but that would be as
close as the hosts would come, as the Quakers hit 5-of-8 free
throws in the final minute of the game.
Short
led the way with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field,
while Zach Broermann (Brookville, IN/Franklin County) scored
12 and Eric Stirling (Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy) and David
Guy (Webb City, MO/Webb City) each scored 10. Stirling pulled
down seven rebounds to lead the team, as the Quakers out-rebounded
the Polar Bears 37-31 in the contest.
ONU
was led by Charlie Kelly who scored 11 points off of the bench
while Kyle Gehle and Greg Badenhop each scored 10.
With
the win, the Quakers improve to 9-13 overall and 5-10 in the
OAC while Ohio Northern falls to 12-10 overall and 9-6 in
league play.
The
next game for the Quakers is on Saturday, February 12 when
the team plays host to the Student Princes of Heidelberg College.
At stake in the game for the Quakers is a spot in the Ohio
Athletic Conference Tournament, as with a win they would guarantee
themselves a spot in the championships.
