Quakers
fall to strong ONU squad

Press Release) Wilmington, OH (January 28, 2004) -- The Wilmington
College Quakers fell to the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University
by a 62-58 score on Wednesday night.
Deon
Short (Cincinnati/Mt. Heatlhy) and David Guy (Webb City, MO/Webb
City) scored 22 and 20 points respectively in the loss.
The Quakers took an early lead in the game when Guy opened the scoring
with a three-point basket three and a half minutes into play.The
visiting Polar Bears promptly went on a 6-0 run to capture their
first lead of the ball game. The lead went back and forth for the
majority of the first half as the game was tied at 18 with 6:42
to play in the period. ONU took the 18-18 tie, and went on an 8-0
run, giving them an 8-point cushion then was cut to four by the
break.
In
the second half the ONU lead grew to as many as 11 before the Quakers
clawed their way back to within three points with 1:18 to play.
That would be as close as the Quakers would come, as the Polar Bears
knocked down their free throws in the four-point win.
Short
and Guy scored 42 of the team's 58 points with Stephen Gee (West
Milton/Milton Union) chipping in for eight. Gee and Short each pulled
down a team-high six rebounds, while Short, Josh Rohrbacher (Columbus/Beechcroft)
and Mike Umpleby (Columbus/Centenniel) each dished out two assists.
Ohio
Northern was led by Jim Conrad's 22 points, while Chad Bostleman
scored nine and Sam Mikolajewski chipped in eight. Bostleman and
Mark Killian each pulled down six rebounds, while Billy Barkimer
dished out five assists and grabbed four steals.
With
the loss, the Quakers fall to 1-17 on the season and 1-10 in the
Ohio Athletic Conference, while Ohio Northern improves to 13-5 overall
and 7-4 in league action.
The
next game for the Green and White is on Saturday, January 31 when
the team travels to Marietta, Ohio to face off in an OAC game against
the Pioneers of Marietta College with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m.
