comeback falls just short against Muskingum
and Gee score 20 points apiece in four-point loss
(WC Press Release) Wilmington, OH (January 7, 2004) -- The Wilmington
College Quakers' comeback fell just four points short, as the team
cut a 19-point deficit to three, but it was not enough as the hosts
held out for the 67-63 victory.
Gee (West Milton/Milton-Union) and David Guy (Webb City, MO/Webb
City) each scored 20 points in the loss while Mike Umpleby (Columbus/Centenniel)
scored 13 for the Green and White.
Quakers never led in the game, as the host Muskies jumped out to
a 21-point lead, 37-16, with six and a half minutes to play in the
first half. The Quakers then went on an 11-0 run to cut the deficit
to 10, before the Muskies scored the last two points of the half,
taking a 12-point, 39-27 lead into the locker room.
the second half, the Green and White cut the deficit to eight two
and a half minutes in, before Muskingum scored 13 of the next 15
points, taking a 19-point lead with 13:28 to play. The Quakers clawed
back, and used a 7-0 run in the games last two minutes to cut the
Muskingum lead to three with twenty seconds left. Cliff Sprang of
Muskingum then hit one of his two free throws, clinching the win
for the hosts.
and Gee each scored 20 points while Umpleby scored 13 and Tyran
Thompson (Middletown/Middletown) put in eight. Guy also pulled down
11 rebounds for his second double-double of his career, while Josh
Rohrbacher (Columbus/Beechcroft) dished out five assists.
was led by Zach Ross who scored 28 points on 8-of-14 shooting from
3-point range, while Roy Skidmore added 12 for the Muskies.
the loss the Quakers fall to 1-10 on the season and 1-4 in the OAC
while Muskingum improves to 7-4 and 3-2 in conference action.

the team travels to Alliance, Ohio to face off against the Purple
Raiders of Mount Union College with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m.
