Warning: Alcohol May Be Dangerous to Your Health
MODERATE DRINKING Many Americans drink occasionally or moderately. Drinking moderately is defined for women and people over the age of 65 as having no more than one drink per day; for a man, it is defined as having no more than two drinks per day. Drinking at these levels is usually not harmful to a person’s health.
The problem is that there are many people who drink more than a drink or two per day. They do not know what moderate drinking is or when to stop drinking. This is why we have so many health problems associated with drinking and so many accidents and deaths caused by drinking and driving.
WHAT IS A DRINK? Many people do not know what is actually classified as a drink. A drink is:
One 12-ounce bottle of beer or wine cooler
One 5-ounce glass of wine
1.5-ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits
EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL Excessive drinking can have many different side effects and consequences. There are many different health problems caused by alcohol, including: liver disease, heart disease, cancer, and pancreatitis. Any person who drinks heavily for an extended period is at risk for any one of these health conditions.
Drinking also causes relationship problems. It can cause a person to become irritable and say or do things they normally would not. Some of these problems include:
Arguments with family and friends
Strained relationships with coworkers
Problems at work (absence, tardiness, or loss of production)
Violence
DRINKING & DRIVING Drinking and driving is a major problem in America. Many do not know when they have had too much to drink. They have a few drinks, but they still think that they are okay to drive. Most people do not realize that it only takes a small amount of alcohol to affect your body. Simple driving tasks such as steering a car and responding to traffic can become impaired when a person’s Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is as low as 0.02 percent (this is lower than the percent, 0.08-0.10, most states’ consider to be legally drunk). Obviously a person’s impairment continues to worsen the more alcohol one consumes. If you are going to be drinking, then do not drive. Set aside a designated driver. He could save your life or somebody else’s life.
